Thursday, April 16, 2026 highlights letter N

In this #AtoZChallenge2026, we started with Letter A on April 1st and have continued daily, except on Sundays.

Julian of Norwich saw some very special images which she meditated on and she came to conclude some revelations

Julian lived from 1342, Her exact year of death is uncertain and is thought to be sometime after 1416. She was a holy and pious woman, who received revelations in 16 visions of Jesus on the crucifix. These inspired her to write two books. Julian’s writing is the earliest of a woman, whose written language has survived.

Little is confirmed about Julian’s personal life. It is unsure when she became a recluse to withdraw from social life. There were speculations (guesses), which were made based on the traditions which were common and prevalent in her time.

Julian prayed to God for three graces.

  1. To relive Christ’s Passion in her mind.
  2. To suffer a physical sickness in her body.
  3. To receive three wounds from God’s grace.

(Julian of Norwich, p. 3)

Julian wrote that God showed her there were two kinds of sicness in mankind – impatience and despair (or doubting fear). (Julian of Norwich, p. 34)
