The Princess of 72nd Street’s boyfriend George & what ended their relationship, was probably Dr Clufftrain

George is an academic. He is studying to gain his doctorate. He is also under the care of a psychiatrist named Dr Clufftrain.

George didn’t like Ellen to sing. Some of her mannerisms also irritated him. He may have complained about Ellen to Dr Clufftrain because the doctor demanded Ellen present herself in his clinic.

Dr Clufftrain man is so tall that he has to bend under doorways in order to walk through them. he also carries a hacksaw, to enlarge the height of the doorway, so that he can walk through. This is an absurdist method of dealing with doorways because hack destroys the doorway and surely no owner of property would allow this to happen. Dr Clufftrain treats George somewhat condescendingly.

Dr Clufftrain had preconceived opinions about Ellen and wrote a prescription for her. She ate one pill and fainted half an hour later. The doctor said it was normal and ordered her to continue eating her medication. Ellen said her speech became slow and halting. Apparently, the doctor thought Ellen was too fast for George and he thought giving her medication to slow her down, would benefit George.

Dr Clufftrain was biased against Ellen. She though he was instrumental in breaking them up.

George obtained his doctorate. He split with Ellen. He abandoned his career and became a shoe salesman, working in a store near Dr Clufftrain’s office. Ellen thought Dr Clufftrain exerted his influence over George and changed him. Ellen thought the doctor appropriated George for himself. Due to his close proximity to the doctor’s office, George ran errands for the doctor. George used to keep a long beard but he shaved if off after Dr Clufftrain exerted his influence.

George liked Ellen and after he stopped seeing Dr Clufftrain, he saw Ellen and suggested they should try to get back together. Ellen refused and she had seen the worst of George.
