After Anne Bille’s 15 babies died, she blamed Christenze Kruckow, saying,

“You, ’tis you, you are a witch.”

(Ravn, p. 11)

Anne also blamed Ousse Lauritzens, a domestic helper, for the deaths. Anne said,

“No, Ousse, it is something evil, it can only be Satan. But someone has allowed Satan inside me, to enter my womb. Who is it, Ousse? I know it is you, but who else?”

(Ravn, p. 17)

Anne Bille told her husband, Eiler Brokkenhuus, that Christenze was a witch who killed her infants. (Ravn, p. 21) He started the proceedings to prosecute Christenze for witchcraft.

This book is interesting for its story on how women were tried and persecuted for alleged witchcraft in the 1600s.
