Clarissa sometimes feels disconnected from her husband Richard. Like when Lady Millicent Burton invited Richard for lunch, she neglected to include her in the invitation. Clarissa felt lonely, as Richard’s symbolic act of participating in Lady Millicent’s private lunch invitation, meant he was willing to leave Clarissa behind, to spend time with another woman.
