Olga Ravn wrote a story that included a dance that never ends …….. until the dancers fell down.

It started when two women had the idea to call the devil, to get a favor from him. They had a book of spells and planned to recite a spell to persuade the devil to do their bidding. They made a special device, to protect themselves for when it was time to banish the devil, they would read from their book of spells.

And so they followed their plan. Their special device was a two headed candle with burnable wicks at both ends. One end was the wick for the devil’s light. The other end was the wick for their light.

On the destined night, they lit their special candle, and chanted a spell. The two women danced.

The devil came. He blew out their candle and cast his own magic on the women. He made them dance faster.

The women danced in the dark. They could not stop. In the dark, they could not see the words in their book of spells. They could not recite the spell to defeat the devil’s spell.

They danced and danced.

The women wanted to light their special candle. They could not see in the dark to light their candle.

They danced and danced.

The night was long.

They danced and danced.

Dawn was long in coming. When there was sufficient light to read, the candle and women were extinguished. They danced themselves to exhaustion and death.

This episode is in the book The Wax Child, that Olga Ravn wrote.
