The author, Amina Cain, has her diary on reading fiction published and it is titled “A Horse At Night: On Writing”. She shares her opinion on many books. She notes that “Dorothea in George Eliot’s Middlemarch does her deepest and finest thinking when she is alone, not when she is with Casaubon (her first husband).” (Cain, p. 35)

Dorothea’s behavior resonates with Ms Cain as she shared that her husband Amar and herself go to great lengths to give each other privacy. They are both writers and need their personal space to write.

Middlemarch’s historical setting was between 1829 to 1832 and it was published around 1871 – 1872. It is a historical novel and used as a text by universities teaching British English literature.

This is Ms Cain’s book, from which the reference was taken.
