Josef K, the protagonist in The Trial (written by Franz Kafka), meets women in the course of his life. He likes the women. Here are the women who Josef K likes:

  1. Elsa, the barmaid who works in the local tarvern.
  2. Fraulein Burstner, a woman who stays in Frau Grubach’s boardinghouse.
  3. The court usher’s wife
  4. Leni, the nurse who takes care of Herr Huld, his Uncle Albert’s friend.

Josef K does not outrightly reject the women for that would seem offensive and insulting to them. This is what he thinks:

“I seem to recruit female helpers, he thought with some surprise, first Fraulein Burstner, then the court usher’s wife, now this little nurse who seems to have an inexplicable desire for me. She’s sitting here on my knee as if it’s the only place for her!”

(Kafka, p. 86)
