Miss Kilman is German. Her surname used to be spelt Kiehlman. After World War I, the British and people all over the world, hated Germans. She felt she was biased against. Not only born poor, clumsy and unattractive, Doris lost her first good job. Now she works as a private tutor to Elizabeth Dalloway and other students.

“Sometimes lately it had seemed to her that, except for Elizabeth, her food was all that she lived for, her comforts; her dinner; her tea; her hot-water bottle at night.”
