Septimus Smith thought “Evans was speaking”. But Evans is his dead friend. The reader wonders how could a dead man speak to him? Septimus thought “Evans answered from behind the tree.” (Woolf, p. 63)
Septimus saw “A man in grey was actually walking towards them. It was Evans! But no mud was on him; no wounds; he was not changed.” (Woolf, p. 63)
