The book Mrs Dalloway was published in 1925. In that context, we might excuse Peter Walsh’s quote. It wasn’t unknown but it was uncommon.

Anyway, Mrs Dalloway notes that Peter married a woman of Indian origin. They met on a ship while sailing to India.
