The first time the court usher’s wife tried directly to seduce Herr K was when he visited her home the following Sunday, after his first Sunday court session, and they were alone.
When Herr K went to visit the private court room on Sunday, he was told by the court usher’s wife that there was no session for that Sunday. The woman initiated to seduce K by complimenting his “beautiful dark eyes” (Kafka, p. 41) She went on to say she would go with him anywhere, even to leave her home forever. She confided in him that the magistrate bought a pair fo silk stockings for her and ordered the male law student to pass them to her. (Kafka, p. 44) that law student obeyed as he was working for the magistrate. She also revealed that the student’s name was Bertold. (Kafka, p. 44)
She explained that the male law student was in a position of power to do anything to her, as he would become a magistrate and be powerful in the future. K witnessed this when the said law student arrived and demanded the woman’s attention. After a while, when K interrupted their playful interaction by making knocking sounds, Bertold displayed insolence by placing his arms around the woman, and kissing her neck.
Bertold and K exchanged words but the former was determined to show he had the upper hand.
