Danny Torrance said that Mr Dick Hallorann also had the Shine. He knew secrets, and had prior knowledge before the events happened. Both of them could predict what people were thinking inside their minds before words were said.

In real life, that is called intuition. In casual slang, it is about reading people’s minds. Where do you find literal mind readers? In institutions where speech is forbidden and communication is non-verbal, body language and thought communication is prevalent.

Danny’s dad, Jack, was an alcoholic and although he thinks he has recovered, he has never been fully healed from his inner conflicts, which made him fallible to drink. He hallucinates and eventually succumbs to his hallucinations.

Danny has hallucinations too, but he saves himself by deciding not to venture into unsafe zones of the hotel Overlook, to avoid the zones where he had hallucinations.

Spoiler facts:

Jack is eventually taken over, like in a possession. The call sends telepathic messages to his friend, Dick, who flies in to help them. Dick later promises Danny to be his friend for life, and to come to help him whenever he is needed.
