What is the meaning of “Society does not acknowledge monsters, even when they are seated at their dinner tables”?
It is more convenient to ignore monsters.
Even family does not acknowledge monsters who sit among them at dinner, lunch and breakfast. They don’t want to upset the family dynamics. Especially if the monster is the sole breadwinner of the family. What happens when society locks up the Monster? Who is going to feed his family? What happens to the Monster’s friends and business associates? Will they be prosecuted too?
A common family Monster is The Alcoholic. He (or she) who drinks away money which is meant to support the family. The Monster who melts down and lashes out at spouse and children at home. My childhood school classmate confided in me that her alcohol addicted dad used to return home with flaming tempers and thrash them.
Outside the family, there are many monsters who have got away with atrocious acts. Why does society turn a blind eye and deaf ear to such monsters?
There can be many reasons.
A Monster can wear many hats. He can wear a Philanthropist’s hat, a businessman’s hat, a Party host’s hat … People tend to dismiss the Monster’s private Monster hat, like he’s entitled to his private moments.
Society does not want to tangle with ugly truths. It prefers to see the Monster through rose tinted glasses. Like, he’s a monster but it is still acceptable. He is an acceptable monster because of his fame, reputation, and credit standing.
Some may try to reason away oddities by saying, “He’s such a big shot. That must be acceptable. He must know what he’s doing.”
We have seen in the news, some monsters who have been apprehended belatedly, long after the fact.
