What was Margaret Atwood’s dream of green bedspread?
Margaret Atwood rented a two bedder apartment at Point Grey. The sole bed was covered by a slippery, aqua-green satin. It was a remnant from the early 1950s trend. Atwood wrote in her Book Of Lives: A Memoir Of Sorts, that she dreamed about this bedspread. In her dream, the bedspread looked very green and its color was shiny and glowing. Her other dream imagery included doors that were half opened. She could have limited views.
Sometimes, she dreamed the green bedspread was in apartments whose interiors were in mazes, which she had never lived in. It seemed as though the green bedspread followed Margaret into different apartments, wherever she moved. Or the green bedspread became a feature in many apartments.
Atwood interpreted her dream as caused by anxiety. She described her dream as being “dreadful”. (Atwood, p. 207) Atwood analyzed her dream and concluded that consciously, she was aware that her Point Grey rental apartment was a temporary, half-way home, where she was waiting to go to another destination.

This is my copy, which I opened, to show both the front cover and back cover, which has Atwood (in her younger days) holding her earlier novel, “Surfacing”.
