Margaret Atwood’s boyfriends

Margaret Atwood’s boyfriends are written in her autobiography “Book Of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts”. It is interesting and she has been kind to her boyfriends, describing them in fair ways.

Who were M Atwood’s boyfriends?

  1. Peggy’s 1st boyfriend – In 1954, when she was 14 years old, she had a 18 year old boyfriend. He had left high school and was working in his dad’s auto-body workshop. Her brother Harold nicknamed him “the dreg”, while Peggy referred to him as Buddy. He wrote her letters, with SWAK hand stamped on his envelopes. That stood for Sealed With A Kiss. Peggy and Buddy broke up on the night of the coming of Hurricane Hael, because her dad Carl, objected to Buddy taking Peggy out on a night when a dangerous hurricane was in the weather report.
  2. Peggy’s second boyfriend was a Catholic boy who cahin smoked and half heartedly tried to convert her.
  3. Her third bf was the leader of the baseball team at a university in Leaside, while studying Geology.
  4. When Peggy was in Grade 13, her 4th boyfriend was Paul, a boy with humor, who gifted her a cow’s heart, pierced with an arrow. It was his present for Valentine’s Day.
  5. She was once engaged to a boyfriend in Toronto, who was studying philosophy for his graduate school. This 5th boyfriend lived in his university’s residence in Massey.
  6. Her 6th bf was Very Nice Boyfriend, aka VNB, whose dad was a used car dealer, who went by the name Frank the Pirate. He sold second-hand cars called Frank the Pirate Specials. Her VNB taught her to drive, but she couldn’t master the art of driving. Peggy wrote a small article about them in the New Yorker and received a note from her VNB, who lived in Vancouver.
  7. In 1967, Peggy married Jim Polk, her former college mate in Victoria College. He was also a writer, and kept a white rat as a pet. There’s a photo of Jim Polk and Peggy cutting their wedding cake in Book Of Lives.
