Love’s Labour is a book published in London and its spelling follows British English spelling. There is an American release too and it follows American English. It is written by Stephen Grosz, a psychoanalyst. As the title suggests, his female and male patients are still in love and laboring to maintain their relationship and marriage.
Before you jump into conclusions, Grosz is an American who studied in the University of California, in Berkeley, and furthered his studies in the University of Oxford. He then settled in London to practice his profession.
In this book review, I quote a case study with gaslighting. It was the psychoanalyst’s opinion that the wife did not fit the profile of an adulterer.
A man had depression when he was a very young child. His parents’ marriage failed and ended in divorce. He was raised by his grandmother and mom. He grew up, got married and upon the first instance of insecurity, he suspected his wife of having an affair with a neighbor living on the same road. However, he refuses to confront his wife because he declines to divorce her. The couple is attending couple therapy because they have grown apart due to their careers, busyness and different opinions in many issues. The marriage therapist requested the husband to attend psychoanalysis because he has his baggage of issues and has to sort them out before he can make progress with couples therapy.
The man told his psychoanalyst that he believes in his suspicion of his wife committing adultery, without checking his home CCTV. He has a terrible fear of confirming or denying his suspicion, because he said he has to divorce his wife if he has proof of her infidelity. This man grasps distant, inconclusive logic and his own gaslighting to persuade himself of his conviction.
I enjoyed reading the book and recommend getting a copy of the book.
