Dr Edmonds told Danny’s parents, Jack Torrance and Wendy Torrance, that their son Danny, may have schizophrenia. Danny suffered from stress when his parents were going through a rough patch in their lives. Jack was drinking and his marriage was understrain.

Dr Edmonds thought Tonay was Danny’s imaginary childhood friend. Since Jack and Wendy’s financial situation improved and so did their marriage, Danny might grow out of his phase of imagining Tony, to cope with his stress.
