When Ellen, who called herself The Princess of 72 nd Street, decided to change her name to Princess Esmeralda, of West 72nd Street, she had met Auriel. He was a street magician and illusionist. He wore wigs and makeup while performing in public.
“Ellen suspected that nothing lay beneath the frail identity of makeup and wigs. She felt like he was draining her.”
(Kraf, p. 57)
After Ellen told Auriel that he drained her energy, he started to wander away from her.
Auriel said that after she begun to ask pointed questions, knock his religion, and have tantrums. Then she had become a part of teh One Great Love and no longer its very essence as she had been at first. The other women were also part of The One Great Love.” (Kraf, p. 58)
When Ellen met Auriel, she had two personalities; Esmeralda and Ellen.
“Sometimes Esmeralda waited for him in front of Saul the Tailor’s. Ellen objected. She thought that Auriel was not very bright, promiscuous, self-centered, and a fake.”
(Kraf, p. 58)
