Gifty was ten years old when she wrote about Nana throwing terrible tempers, smashing the home’s TV, punching the wall, and using abusive language. Their mom could not help Nana, nor get help for him.

Gifty wrote about this in her secret diary. Later, in her narrative, she wrote Nana “died of a heroin overdose three months later” after his prom. (Gyasi, p. 24)
