Gifty is the nickname of the narrator in Transcendent Kingdom

The book title means beyond the range of normal human experience. Gifty’s life with her family, friends and surrounding circles, are full of abnormal experiences. Her mother has retreated into her own world of being infantile; she sleeps or lies down on the bed most of the time. Her appetite is very poor, eating only 2 tablespoons a meal. She is weak and thus lacks energy, which may be the reason why she wants to sleep all the time. She has no presence of mind to even pack her own luggage when she had to fly to another state, to stay with her daughter Gifty. (Gyasi, p. 6)
