Margaret Atwood, in “Burning Questions: Essays and Occasional Pieces”, recommends Marilyn French’s three volume trilogy titled “From Eve to Dawn”. Although it is in four volumes and totaling around 800 pages, don’t let this intimidate you.

Six hundred pages is like the basic volume of the average tome like Book Of Lives: A Memoir Of Sorts , The Loneliness Of Sonia and Sunny, and etc. Their respective book reviews are in the links.

Ms French writes about the good, the bad, and the ugly. She spares no punches.

This is my favorite quote from Atwood, about “From Eve to Dawn”:

As a reference work, it’s invaluable: the bibliographies alone are worth the price.”

(Atwood, p. 21)

Atwood does not write books just to sell them. She shares her expertise to benefit readers. Take what you need to know.

This is my book. I’ve opened the back cover to show the blurbs.

Undergraduates and postgraduates might use these, or refer to the bibliographies to pick for research topics. Each thesis (or research paper) requires around 100 references. Without any leads, you’ll search from scratch and spend days to compile a list. This series From Eve to Dawn, comes with bibliographies.

Marilyn French took around 20 years to complete her first three volumes. And then some more to write her fourth volume.
